Sometimes it isn't that curiosity kills the cat, it transmorphs the kitsune and leaves them stranded in another dimension, separated from most of their previous abilities and skills. In this case, that kitsune decided to check out what appeared to be an interspatial rift in the fabric of space and time. He figured it might not be too big a deal to investigate. Of course, things seldom go as planned for the poor fox. That rift certainly existed, but it's pull was far greater than he had calculated. He ended up getting pulled right in to that chaotic shifting mass of darkness, and thrown off to worlds unknown, causing him to simply black out before he even fully entered the portal. After an unknown amount of time had passed, he woke in some strange new world. But, stranger still, was the fact his body had yet again changed into something. It was similar to his already well known feral kitsune form, but something was decidedly different. He was still a nine tailed fox, but of a most certainly different kind. Having fluff in places he lacked, having a rather different color pattern and even a fairly different body shape.

The Ninetales is a naturally curious, yet quite mischievous creature, often delighting in causing confusion or startling others, though it is far from malicious. It is often his way of testing his friends, and seeing how they react in certain situations. And more often than not, if the test is passed, he'll give them some sort of reward for their troubles. And if they fail, well, he still at least will give them a hug or nuzzle to try to cheer them up!
In spite of being completely feral, he has exceptional dexterity and flexibility with those nine tails of his, often using them in ways that can not only emulate, but even exceed those that may have thumbs or other such limbs.

Addendum: I play him with one minor difference from official Pokémon mechanics. The fact that he can bite with his mouth, scratch with his claws, or smack people with his tails, without having to use 'moves' to do so. It never made sense to me that Pokémon cannot use those parts of their bodies to attack without having a move learned for it. Especially since in the anime they DO use 'melee' attacks without using moves. For balance purposes however they'd do less damage and not have any added special effects when compared to the actual moves.

Due to actually being transformed into a Pokémon, rather than being born one, he has multiple special abilities such as the ability to turn back into a Vulpix and Hydromorphism.
Hydromorphism essentially applies Water type advantages to Ice moves and defenses.
